I volunteered as a foster parent for two seasons with the SC Animal Shelter. I fostered 22 kittens over that time and it was one of the best experiences I've had. I started because I was wanting to do some volunteer work in the community, and I really wanted to adopt, but my husband wasn't there yet--this was a great compromise. I got to have kittens and he did not have the long term commitment of adopting, which he wasn't ready for yet. He did finally came around and we adopted two of the kittens from our last litter of fosters. They are now 7 months old and we've known them since they were 3 weeks old. It's been wonderful!

The Santa Cruz SPCA also always needs volunteers: http://www.santacruzspca.org/

Another great way to help the animals: get involved with Annie's Blankets http://anniesblankets.org/index.html

I have found a product that is a great odor "killer" and easy to use. Originally was looking for something to use on my dog who loves to chase skunks! Found this product online and for me it works as promised for that nasty skunk stink. It also worked when we needed to get rid of the odor left behind in an antique car we purchased. The car had been garaged for 20 years an the rats had decided the seat cushions were a great place to live. You can imagine the task we had to get rid of the stink of 20 years of rat urine and droppings! Well this product, SCOE 10X, really worked. I recommend it for all your nasty odor removal jobs! Their website is http://www.scoe10x.com/scripts/SCOE10X-Odor-Eliminator.asp Go there and read all the testimonials; amazing product!

Thank you for posting a shout-out for JEARS! I have been deeply involved with this group remotely since the week of the quake, and can tell you that any donations WILL be used to support animals; all of the members are volunteer-only, and we only use services that have been donated to us for things like PR efforts. I can also assure you that while are a coalition of private non-profits and are not government-run, our focus is still on the animals and reuniting them with their families; we are not a rogue group just grabbing animals for glory / adoption / etc., and the three founding groups have been actively saving aniimals for many years in Japan. Please visit our FB page (and website in progress); even if you can't donate at this time, every "like" and "share" helps to get the word out!
